Should it be necessary to replace the engine long , loyal service after years , and the required engine is no longer available, you can fall back on a so-called Long Block and Short Block. These are cheaper, and are more available than an original complete engine , of the same type. The engine development is continuous, and thus , more and new types of engines on the market. A long block is a new rotating part (crankshaft , connecting rods, camshaft , pistons, etc ) together with the cylinder heads as opposed to a short block in which there are no cylinder heads are mounted . Components such as water pump, starter, alternator , fuel pump, flywheel housing etc. should be transferred from the old engine , or renewed if no longer functional.
